Save and Autosave takes forever

Since the recent update, I have found Fusion 360 to be extremely slow when saving and Autosaving.  When I say slow, I mean it take approximately 4-10 minutes to complete the action.  I have also had times where the Autosave would provide an error message indicating it was unable to complete the Autosave function.  It then asks if I would like to save manually.

Another issue I have come across is that Autosave is saving more frequently then it is set to.  I have it set to 100 minutes as I normally save on my own quite often.  However, it is Autosaving much more reguarly then that.  I have not times the interval but it has done it a couple times within the 60 minutes I worked with it this morning.  Normally, I would have no problem with this except in it's current state I find myself waiting for 4-10 minutes while it performs the Autosave making it difficult to do much in the hours time before I go to work.

Is this a problem with the update or my computer?  I am running version 2.0.1708 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-in, Late 2012) w/ 2.5 GHz i5 processor, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, and 121 GB Flash Storage w/ 31.31 GB free.

Thanks for your assistance.

Does the below forum discussion match the behavior you are seeing?

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/design-and-documentation/strange-error-message/m-p/5841513#M34418

The syncing with the cloud portion of the save process should occur in a background process enabling you to work during. Do you use any anti-virus software? If so, does the behavior change if you disable?

Thanks,

I have never had a saving problem before, but since the last update, as on other comments it seems to take ages to auto save. I am on a pc not Mac. I've not had this problem on earlier versions, hopefully it is just an update problem.

We made some changes in the last release for file recovery. You can now access recovery documents from the file menu.

recover documents command.png

With new designs, they need to be saved initially with a file name before being added to the recovery directory. If a design is opened for tool long, you will receive an warning message reminding you to save:

"Auto Recovery

Fusion 360 was unable to automatically save a recovery file for XXXXX. To avoid data loss, we recommend you manually save the recovery file now."

This change was intentional. This is step 1 in a larger effort to improve the saving experience in Fusion 360. The next release will contain some further enhancement in this area.

I hope this answers your questions.

Thanks,

Well that certainly explains the message that pops up. Glad you guys added this feature as it reminds me to save the version.

This still leaves the slow autosave problem and the fact that it is saving more often then I have it set to. I guess my issue is not so much the fact that it is autosaving so often, so much as when it is autosaving I am unable to work on the project until it is finished several minutes later.

Thanks for your assistance and such a great program. Not sure what I would do without it.

Hi,

I saved my file to a new name as soon as I opened Fusion, this took a few minutes for Tito save, and then when I saved it again it took a number of minutes again.

i haven't had this issue before, I'm not sure if it is the latest release that is causing it, but it has happened since it upgraded to the latest release

thanks again for your time with this, it looks like it took around 2 minutes to save a simple block drawing

How large are the designs? For example, if I create a box primitive and save the file, the response is quite fast. I do not experience any noticeable delays in being able to get back to work. Fusion 360 is saving first to your local hard drive's cache directory. After saving, then the file should start syncing with A360. The syncing portion should be in a background process and not impact Fusion 360 behavior.

A couple of thoughts come to mind:

1.  The more complex (more geometry, more components, etc) a design is, the larger the file size is. If you are writing 200 KB vs 200 MB to the hard drive, there will be a perceivable difference in save performance while writing to the hard drive. Could the design have become more complex since the last release and this explains the save behavior? ... Or do you notice that this is impacting even small simple designs as well? One thing you can do is to export a local archive file, and this will give you an idea of how large the design is.

2. How many processors does the computer have? Is there one available to do the background syncing?

3. Is the hard disk a solid state or a disc drive? Is the drive fragmented?

4. I know that in Autodesk Inventor land, sometimes anti-virus software will "scan" and interfere with the freshly installed version of Inventor and not the previously installed version. Is it possible that anti-virus software may be interfering with the save? Could you test temporarily disabling any anti-virus software to see if there is any change in behavior?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts/comments on this. I will check in with development to see if there are any further thoughts on this issue.

One more thing, can you confirm that you are using build 2.0.1708 from the Help > About Fusion 360 dialog?

Thanks,

Hi,

Just back on it now. My machine is. A school issue laptop, so I am limited to access antivirus software unfortunately, the design I tested with is a very simple rectangular cube - version is 2.0.1708 - I believe I have a solid state drive, the machine operates inventor, Maya, Revit, motion builder and 3ds max with no issues
One thing I have noticed when it loads up fusion it says 'Exchange Material Service has stopped working'.

Thanks

Steve

Thanks for your help. It would seem to be the complexity of the file I think. The archive of the file is 47mb but it has a bunch of complexity to it's design. I tested a few less complex designs and they appear to be acting appropriately. I am going to see about separating out the components into their own files to alleviate some of the complexity.

I am on build 2.0.1708.

I appreciate the time and assistance!!!
