I assembly of several parts, one parent, many child. I want replace that parent. I read it would not be straight forward  so I tried to export new parent and inport it to another project, then inport childs. Is this best way?

@torstil,

At this time that is the best workflow.  We have it in our backlog to add replace functionality for referenced components in a model.  Once the team has completed in place edit, work will start on this.

Cheers,

@promm, Can you update on status of this very usful feature? It can be tedious to re-arrange components if you decide at a later point that you'd better created a sub-assembly in the first place and having this situation quite regualarly I am really looking forward to seeing this feature live.

I Agree,

I think dragging and dropping components on the hierarchy tree would save me some mess.  Right now I am working on a furniture layout and the standoffs wood and steel are all their own components,  now I want to drag them into a "old furniture" component that I can turn off but instead I am left with 3 off components on my tree.

It's not the best, but I've come up with pretty basic solution:

1. Create a new component

2. Go to the original component (the parent of the assembly you want to copy) and copy all of it's children.

3. Activate your new component and paste all the children in.

4. If the parts need to be in the same location, create a rigid group  of all the children parts in the new parent, because none of your constraints will be present.

This gets you two parent parts with the same children, using the same parameters, and if you modify the children in one of them, the children in the other are updated as well. However, you can add parts to the new parent and that will not result in new parts being added to the old parent.

Not sure if this is what you're looking to do, but hope it helps somebody who was looking for a quick workaround to this process.
