Replace inserted svg in the beginning of the workflow, keeping the modifications

Hi.

I searched the forums but couldnt find a similar question. Hope its ok.

My question is simple. If I start new with an inserted .svg file. I make a lot of extrude, parametric modifications etc.

Since it's parametric. Is it possible to replace the first .svg file to a similare shape, and still keep all the parametric modifications?

Let's say I import a square, and transform it in 10 steps. Can I go back and replace it with a hexagon (as an hypothetical example) and still keep the 10 modifications?

Or is it possible to copy all the steps and apply it to a different shape, as long as there are no geometric errors or constraints so to speak.

Thanks

Hi @on4itjl02

You will be able to insert the new object, but then you will need to re-assign all of the lost projections, links, etc. withing the design history timeline.

There are different options between Parametric Modelling and Direct Modelling. Since in Direct Modelling you do not have the timeline, you will not be able to go back and replace the object.

Yes, generally that can be done, however if it works in your specific case depends on how your specific workflow looks.

This is easy enough to just test! Have you tried it out?

Hi,

please share the file and explain which features you want to keep.

File > export > save as f3d on local device > attach to next post

I've added the file. Now this is just an example, but I'm more interested in the principle, rather than this particular drawing.
So I started by importing a Square.svg (why, that's not the point, because next time it may be in the shape of rabbit silhouette, but if it doesn't work with a square, a more advanced silhouette svg is not likely to work neither). I then did some extrudes and a loft into a hexagon, also from a svg, attached inside the file,

Now lets say I didn't want to use the first square.svg. I instead wanted to start the drawing with the hexagon.svg and then do the exact same extrudes, lofts etc. It would save a lot of time if the first svg, could be replace with a second svg, and then every other parameter is intact. Of course I understand, it could render unexpected results sometimes, but is it doable?

Or copy the timeline from step 2 and onwards and paste it on another svg as a new starting point?

I hope you understand what I'm looking for. I tried to replace the svg but couldn't find out how to, and also tried to delete and replace the the first step in the timeline but only got a lot of errors 🙂

Here is what I would do.

First take Use2replaceintitialsquare Sketch (hexagon) after Sketch1.

Then, within Use2replaceintitialsquare Sketch, copy and paste it to the appropriate location.

Modify extrude1 from hexagonal.

It was changed to this form.

After that, you can change the dimensions to whatever dimensions you want.

Here is a video, for your reference.

Thank you, this was exactly what I was looking for. It was really helpful description and the video was great.

Ps, the video was great, but when in fullscreen, the lowest part of the video ends up outside the view (Firefox). But I managed to see it in window mode.
