"Unassign and Delete" material not working

I've been working on a complicated project that has had plenty of revisions and the materials panel is getting messy. I try to remove some of the old materials by right-clicking "unassign and delete" but nothing happens. There is no error message but the material doesn't go away either.

I appreciate all your directions. Your results are perfect and what I am after.

I am still stuck back on the distances between the planes. You mentioned 1, 0.95, 0.9. This doesn't seem to work for some reason and I can only make those numbers work if they are physical rather than proportional.

I will have a fresh look tomorrow I think.

The brain is definitely not working.

A couple of questions... Is this design comprised of multiple parts that are in different files?

Are any of the materials linked to the physical material of the parts?

Both of these conditions can cause the problem you are having.

Yes there are items from other files but the material in question was created in this file and only applies to components in this file.
