Puzzled: how to perpendicular slice a curved wall.

Hello fellow designers,

 

I've got an issue I can't find a solution to. Perhaps it's a simple trick my mind keeps hidden from me, perhaps it's magic 🙂

 

I've created a curved wall. On this wall I want to project a line which I want to use to slice the wall. Only issue I run into, at the curved section the slicing plane starts to curve as well. And I need it to stay perpendicular. Later I want to use this curved profile for a sweep. ANd if the curve is tilted, so will the sweep.

 

Am I missing the obvious? Can't stand myself for not getting it 🙂

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

One way is use the patch workspace and extrude a surface and trim then thicken, see attached file.

Very cool solution and result. I'm curious though how you could do this while maintaining a consistent slope. In your example the lower section would end up with a lower/flatter slope then the section that is closer to parallel with the cutting line.

Not sure What you mean... You mean real life production? Or do you mean how I created this in Fusion? It has been a puzzle, I can tell you that up front 🙂

I downloaded the solution file, and understand the solution/result. But assuming you had a client that was building a slide similar to your result, but they wanted the slope of the slide at the bottom to be the same as the slope at the top, is there a way to do that?

 

As a reference, if you look at the attached screen grabs from the file shared above, the steep slope from the top of the ramp (seen best in the "Back" view) levels out toward the bottom of the ramp (seen best in the "Right" view).

Ah, okay, I do think I understand you know. This is the result of projecting a straight line to a curved surface and that's what my customer came up with. I am not sure if possible but perhaphs you could somehow create an arc or a spline that when projected keeps the slope. Or you might try a coil or part of a coil. I find these straight/curved matters the hardest 🙂

I noticed in my first file I got the radius and diameter mixed up.Smiley Embarassed I fixed that but found some problems.

 

If you changed the length of the wall the coil didn't move, when created I'd snapped to a sketch origin but after an edit the origin moved to the correct place but the coil didn't update. To fix I created a component containing the coil and positioned with a joint.

 

Next challenge was the circular trough. To get a pipe cut to work you need the wall perpendicular to the helix at the short end of the wall. You need to rotate using the diameter in the middle of the wall as the reference.

The design seems quite robust now as long as you don't make the sweep angle more than 90° or less than about 5°. The trough diameter is set to 75% of the wall thickness.
