Project to Surface of a sphere

Hello

I have been trying to project a sketch onto a sphere as shown below:

sketch.PNG

The intention is to wrap the curve around the sphere but I get this result:

As you can see I have chosen the 2 available options.

1. Nearest point squashes my curve.

2. Along vector projects a mirror image and merges the tail.

is there any way I can wrap around so I can preserve the curve.

Many thanks

Kev

I am assuming that you want this shape wrapped around the sphere like it was a decal, is that correct?  Unfortunately, Fusion does not support this type of projection at this time.  You should post this on the Fusion Idea Station, and see if others users share this requirement.

Sorry we don't have this capability yet.

Hi Kev,

There are of course ways to get a good result.  I would probably make multiple offset construction planes all spaced apart by a user defined parameter (for easy later adjustment).  You can then make a sketch on each construction plane, doing an intersect operation of the sphere with each plane.  Then do a circular pattern of points around each circle made by the intersection, so that you get a spherical grid of construction points as guidance to draw a 3d sketch(s) curving around the sphere like you want.

If you're interested in doing something like this I can put together some screenshots.  If this is the case, it would help to know what you want to do with this geometry.

Another way I would probably do it for fairly simple geometry like this is to make an equation table in a spreadsheet and import it as a nice spline curve.  If you would like to know how to do that let me know.

Hmm. I've been trying to wrap a picture around a sphere instead. See result in F360 below.

F360 - Decal issue.jpg

What can be seen?

- Picture is distorted

- View cube is set at front, all distances and angle is zero, but  image is not centered correctly. See the length differences between red and blue line

Later: Meanwhile I noticed, that these are no absolute values,  but relative to the chosen insertion point (mouse position)

Now look at Inventor's decal, for comparison

Inventor 2015 - Decal.jpg

Smiley Wink This point goes to Inventor.

Later: Perhaps it's only half of a point. Though Inventor's decal seems looking better for me, it's not like in reality. But only approximations are possible.

I think, I should try the same on a cylinder.

Thanks again Walter, I did not know Fusion360 could wrap images like that (although I may try later to figure out why sometimes it doesn't let you choose a curved face).  It would be cool to perform distortion correction on an image before wrapping it in Fusion.  It could be a way to provide a nice guide to make a 3d spline trace maybe.
