Problem with parent/child method

Hi group!

If you look at the enclosed screen shot you will see a bunch of hexagons arranged in a defined rosette pattern.  Some are tower-like and have  a thickness of an inch and the others of 1/16".  Both sets have their own parent/child relationships and are multiple copies and therefore the changes I make to one reflect to all.  You can also see that I have added a small hole on the flat hexagons in order to add a small rivet-like piece and them make 6 of them in an hexagonal pattern on all of the flat hexagons.  My problem is when I add the rivet piece it doesn't copy onto all - the only thing I can get to replicate is the hole.  Is this because the hole is a feature and not just created geometry?  Are there any other "features" which could be used to create the rivet and thus replicate throughout the whole sheet?  Thanks for your help.

are you creating the rivet while the short hexagon component is active?

Hard to tell what's going on without the file.
