Problem with hollowing out a solid

Anonymous

Dear all,

I recently created a solid that I would like to hollow-out so that the walls make only 3.5mm. I tried to do this with the 'Shell' function but I get the following error message:

"The operation would cause a large topology change. Try adjusting the values or changing the input geometry."

Could someone help me? I attach the object in case you would like to give it a glance (it is the larger one of the two solids that I want to hollow-out).

My best thanks in advance and

kind regards,

Christoph

Because it's hollow already with the thin walls there is not 3.5mm possible.

Thank you very much for helping me!

Excuse me, but I do not entirely understand. The object I designed is a solid. Why would it be hollow already?

As for the 'might help', could you elaborate, please?

Your file is a huge mess of useless sketches. And the geometry of that larger body is also a huge mess.

When you open the file, do you see the same thing than in the print screen I attach here?

Yes...minus the grid because I don't have it turned on.

Thank you for the constructive words then.

May I kindly ask if you see any possibility for transforming the solid into a hollow-one with a wall-thickness of about 3.5mm (a little larger if necessary)?

Not with the current geometry, no. I'm not surprised to hear that the Shell tool choked on it.

Ok, I see.

May I ask what I should avoid in the future not to run into this kind of problem again?

Might help -  you sort your problems,

I am happy to help out, but Chris and I have not picked up your design intent.

I found the actual problem with the Section Analysis, you have symmetric? cavities in the model.

some things to consider -

build your body on one side of the origin plane, when done mirror it.

creates half the work.

Use eyeballs to hide stuff, what gives with the split body move?

It can just be left where it was and hidden with the eyeball.

Do not use the Move Tool.

Fully define sketches.

Remove empty sketches.

Too many spline points.

I have forgotten where the origin was, but after the move it was no further use to you.

You have a sliver body so small it can not be seen in the window, but earlier in the construction you were Extrude cutting them out of existence,

where the body > Remove would save a few sketch / Extrude manoeuvres,

two sketch / extrudes that might be symmetrical, in separate sketch extrudes.

Use oversize Sketches to cut or add material, so that these sliver cavities will not be there.

And these Might help....
