Problem using Joint command with some models?

I am new to using joints but they are really great for keeping things in place!

 

I watched this video by Product Design Online: How to Create Assemblies and Joints in Fusion 360 https://youtu.be/t41QmQszcbE 

 

However, when I use some files (such as this Arduino from the Autodesk Gallery) I get weird problems where when I try to make a joint using the "Insert Into Current Design" of the Arduino.

 

Say I am making an enclosure. When I do so and try to make a joint with the Arduino to place it inside it will only move part of the Arduino. I tried some things using Rigid Bodies but I am not sure what I am doing.

 

I figured there is a way to fix this but I thought I would ask and see what the proper way to do it is? Not sure what my commands or search terms could be.

 

For instance do I need to make a joint of everything in the original Arduino model? There are a ton of components so I figured going 1 by 1 would be slow and probably not the right way to do it.

The forum users will need your model to troubleshoot your issue and give you a relevant answer.  It is always a good idea to attach your model if you are asking direct questions about it.  You not only get relevant answers but most of the time you get quicker answers.  So please attach your model.  If you do not know how to attach your model, open it in Fusion360, select the File menu and then choose Export and save the .F3D file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section of a reply forum post to attach it.

definitely attach your model, as requested by @jhackney1972 .  However, a quick answer is to open your Arduino design, make sure that Design History is on, use the Rigid Group command, and select the entire design.  This will make the entire Arduino design a single rigid unit, so when you Insert it, and create a Joint, the entire design will move as one.

@jeff_strater the rigid group command does not require for the timeline to be enabled. Only the as-built joints need that. I would generally recommend NOT to turn on the timeline on imported electronic assemblies. They usually are static and don’t require any parametric changes, so having a timeline isn’t really needed

 

That will keep the file “light”.

right you are, @TrippyLighting - I did not bother to test this.  I always think of Rigid Group as an "As-Built Rigid Joint with more than 2 components", so I assumed that it didn't work in a direct design, because As-Built Joint does not work in a direct design.  So, right.  Don't turn on history in your Arduino design, @CaseyJScalf - it's not needed in this case.

Thank you this was very helpful.

 

Part of the problem may have been that I needed to hit enter as even though it looked wrong at first the rest of the components in the Arduino moved with it once I accepted it.
