Possible to create new custom fusion material shaders realtime or raytraced

I saw in the documentation that there are five appearance types available and it seems like that everything is limited to these predefined materials (or some permutation of them).
Is it possible to create new custom fusion rendering material shaders, either realtime or raytraced.
I have a background in shader development so if there was some documentation on where to create new shaders I think i would be able to get started from there.
