Possible Bug - Constrained Orbit

Hello

This could be a bug or it could be my misunderstanding the tool

Anyway, have you noticed that the constrained orbit and free orbit operatwe exactly the same way?

I would expect the constrained orbit to only operate on the X,Y and possible Z planes (with  a key press) unless sizeable movements of the mouse where entered.

If I move the mouse left to right (ish with slight variations obviously)  say I would expect the display only to rotate in the XY plane . I would expect free orbit to closely mirror every movement of the mouse in all directions

Thanks

Matt

Hi @docara

Thanks for posting!

Free and constrained orbit can appear to work in very close to the same way when working with parts that are close to a cubic form, but you can see the differences more easily when working with a very long design.

I like to use a Z-up modeling orientation in Fusion 360 to make my CAM setups easier. In the screencast below, we see that, when working with a constrained orbit, I can only rotate the part on the XY plane (around the Z-axis of the model), regardless of how the Z-axis is oriented.

However, when I switch to free orbit, I can rotate the model on any plane.

The following resources may also help you understand the differences between free and constrained orbits - though these resources are for Inventor, orbiting works the same way in Fusion 360.

Hopefully this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the reply.

I've watched the screencast and to be honest I can see the difference when you demonstrate things side by side but in practice I don't find things are working particularly well.

To me, I think the constrained orbit should be based on the screen display at the time of selection and NOT on F360 inbuilt plane system. So Side to Side and Up and Down only. An errand mouse movement when zoomed in caused havoc.

Hi @docara

Thanks for posting! One way to achieve the time of selection preference you described is to use the circle that comes up when constrained view is activated to navigate around the model.

You do present a good idea here - please post this thought on the Fusion 360 Ideastation! Our product management team looks through the Ideastation weekly when prioritizing product improvement and new features and I'm sure they would appreciate your input!
