point to point move of round component

Anonymous

After new update today I can't select the center of any round face for a point to point move.  I'm trying to move a flat washer to a round hole and can't select the center of the washer or the center of the hole.  Looking for a way around it.

Even if you are using DM, you should create the components In-place or use the Joints. I would really want to see a situation, where you have to use the Move tool. I'm very curious now!

Yes for a single component or a rigid group. But I can't copy a rigid group. My issue is I snag bolt, washer and nut off of mcmaster car and want to put this in multiple places as a group so after I get the first one done I just copy the set and then paste it using the point-to-point, then re-paste and do the next. The only way to use align is to make a new component for the nut bolt washer set and then copy and align the set. Not bad just different and me off this morning.

Yes you are totally correct but in situations like this we have to accept the reality and find a workaround until they sort the issue out, the point to point move tool is very handy and I do use it, I am sure they will fix this one quickly.

Hi Jeff,

I've also noticed that when you import a new object or file into an exsiting one, switching between point to point and free move resets any object rotation before the move is completed.

Thanks for looking into this problem!

Best,

Monty

May I ask, why aren't using the Joint command?

Ben.

Yes, like that and I just found out that Free Move isn't exactly like the old move where if we click on one of the directional handles, we can then select the surface we want it to move to. Now it selects that component, seriously is it so hard to people to click cmd/shift key to add more components to be moved?

I think I found a solution to this problem, if the component you wanna capture surface was grounded, then it can be captured the same as the previous version was. Troublesome, but effective. Try it.

I prefer not to use the joint command because in many cases for me, I am moving bodies that are not necessarily a component to another. By using the joint tool, it adds a step which I have to delete the joint tab after I move the object. The original move tool just made things very simple for me - and I assume many others.

But that requires the referenced component to be grounded which can cause all sorts of other issues

Hahaha, that's true. Although, I prefer the K.I.S.S Rule over all engineering rules.

Regardless sounds like AutoDesk is looking to fix this issue asap anyway.

Yeah, I suspect AD is already well aware of the issue and will give us back our old move tool, even if it's renamed as Free Move.

There is a flip button on the align window that lets you change the direction to the way you want it to be.

When you have a couple thousand hours worked with Fusion 360 you'll have discovered that yes the flip button does flip the part, but it is still is not always oriented the way you want it.

@Beyondforce When you start designing complex objects - I deliberately avoid the term "component" because that's not the topic - then designing in place is often not practical, or even possible.

Now I have to know what "complex objects" means!?

I have been using f360 for 2+ years now and use the move tool and point to point all the time it is a major part of my workflow especially when you have a huge library of components that you import into your assemblies. The joint tool is a very specific tool and not a requirement for placing a nut or bolt, the same goes for the align tool it has again its own use cases but for the day to day alignment of small objects quickly the move tool is invaluable ( or was ).

If the Joint tool is not a Point to Point tool, then what is it!? I'm trying to understand, why the move tool is better for positioning parts.

why would i want to create a joint to place a washer over a hole?

Same here.  I don't always need or want the function of a joint and for me the old point to point function was the fastest way I had found for getting imported parts into position.  Since this last update I have been using the align which does not seem near as quick.  It has been especially annoying when I try to move groups of components at the same time.

You just answered your own question... to Place and to Join (fix it in place so it won't move). With the Joint tool, you are making two moves in one action 😉

Guys, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to criticized your workflow, I'm just trying to understand your workflow and perhaps learn something new!
