Performance Issues on Macbook Pro 15"

Hi,

I have huge performance issues on my brand new MacBook Pro late-2016.

My specs are:

i7 2,7 GHz Quad-Core

16GB 2133 MHz LPDD3

Radeon Pro 455 2048 MB

512GB SSD

So it's really not a slow machine. Not the fastest in the Apple store but certainly not slow.

However when I open the Tabby platform model (supplied here: https://www.osvehicle.com/download/ ) Fusion become unusable slow. I already researched performance issues about Laptops with 2 graphics cards and this didn't help, I looked into other threads about performance issues and even activated the "Limit effects to optimize performance" option and it didn't help...

Opening the file takes about 90 seconds and panning and zooming is so incredibly slow...

What can I do?

Thanks!

Jakob

Hmm, I have the Late 2016 Model (see my signature), so I don't mind giving it a shot, mind adding me into your project?

And I just looked into the video you shared, it seems that the model is converted from a surface file (something like from 3Ds Max) then a solid STEP file, cause it seems to have many surfaces and isn't a solid model.

Thanks, I took a quick look at your model and I think the major problem is in the component none:1, there are more than 10000 unstitched faces. This is something Fusion really doesn't handle well. For each of these faces, currently Fusion generates one body for it, which slows down the performance significantly. If you set them to be invisible in the UI browser, I am sure the performance will be much better.

Also, please try to make sure you use OpenGL core profile driver in the Fusion preference dialog.

Thanks

Just checked your model, the issue mainly lies on the Unstitched Surfaces. I already recorded a screen cast on my side, but still waiting for it to upload.

TL;DR: Basically you need to stitch those surfaces up, but I'm not sure how to do that when the software becomes that slow. Hopefully some other surface experts will be able to come help you out.

 Sorry for the sound.

Hey guys,

Yup, that's right, that solves the performance issues and I totally get that these unstitched surfaces get any CAD program into trouble. I'm wondering though if this is really a problem of the file or if it might be an import problem?

In my original message I posted a download link for the original files (they're open source). Maybe, you Chengyun can try to import this file yourself and see if the file or the import is the problem.

Thank you for your help though! 🙂

Cheers,

Jakob

@chengyun.yang

Thanks for the info that unstitched surfaces can slow Fusion down based on how it works with them.

That makes sense and is also valuable information!

What was the original file format in?

Usually the issue is cause the model was modelled in a polygon modeller and then exported, leaving behind broken surfaces and when imported into CAD softwares, will require to be manually fixed.

I'd doubt, that Renault (the original designers) designed this in a polygon modeler and then suggest to use FreeCAD for opening their files...

The original file is .stp

Okay, can you attach the step file here? cause I visited the site and all I saw is 2 seats or 4 seats to download the file?

Tomorrow I'll try to import it into SolidEdge and see how it converts the file, if all is well, I'll convert it into a STEP file from there and put it into your Fusion project.

Hey,

They file is too big to attach here. Just download either model. Both have the same problem.

Thank you for looking into this!

Yes, I have tried to import the original file into Fusion and I got the same result with more than 10000 unstitched surfaces. In my opinion, for this kind of case, Fusion should try to stitch them together as part of the importing process. But I also understand some users might not like the default auto-stitching. So one reasonable solution will be to provide a UI dialog so the users can choose how they would like the model to be imported. However, this is not something Fusion supports for now, as Fusion does all the importing on the cloud. This has been discussed inside Fusion team and there is a plan to support it in the future but I am not aware of the detailed plan. @jeff strater, @colin smith

Thanks

Chengyun

I bet most of these unstitched faces are in the tires. If you don't need them, then delete them.

Hi guys,

I am having serious issues on my late 2015 MBPro (i7 3.2GHz, 16GB Ram, SSD). Doesn't really matter which project I load, after a minute or so, the fan turns on and doesn't stop. After another 5mins the app gets completely unresponsive, hourglass etc. I have set the graphics effects off. Even with NO project loaded I can hear the fan turning slowly after a while. Already re-installed Fusion.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks !!!
