Perforation on a sheet metal around obstacles

Hello!

need your advice:)

I need to drop weight of the detail and want to perforate my sheet of metal.

But I need to go around places with mounting holes for equipment.

Right now I did component/tool with multiple cylinders in particular pattern, multiplied it through pattern tool, hide tools which overlapped with right holes and cut my sheet metal with it.

its... doable, but pretty messy and I don’t like how it looks.

maybe you can suggest better ways to do it:)

Your unlikely to get much in the way of answers without more details. impossible to understand what your doing without some visuals,(pics, a file etc.)

the last time I opened a .f3z file from the forum I vowed to never do it again. (it had a few hundred mesh objects that all uploaded to my data panel, and some crazy linked interdependencies.  clean up was tedious)  breaking links and uploading .f3d files are nicer for your fellow forum members.

 

but I digress

 

the attached shows an approach where you add back in the areas you want to have a trimmed out look. see attached-

,f3z file is for models with linked external components.  it packages up the assembly along with all the linked models and send them together.  to export as .f3d file you have to break the links to the external components first.

do you know why it so resource consuming?

I try to use honeycomb pattern and in size of pattern 7*80 it's really slow (around 5 seconds per box:)) to uncheck  boxes on my 2016 macbook pro (8gb). On my desktop it's much faster, but as smooth as on another tasks.

Any suugestions about optimizations?

Thanks for your reply. Loaded your file.  Your approach, as I get it, based on - 1st perforation, 2nd frames for holes. Unfortunately it can be complicated if you use components as a tool to do a holes.

Do you know is it possible to write down script/extension which will do the frames around "tooled" holes?

This approach is based on make an perforated base and form the borders around holes later. It's ok for less than 10 holes, but if it it's excceed 10 I see it little bit complicated to:

1. combine tools with sheet to cut holes
2. make manually offset around each cut

Or maybe I just couldn't get it how to do it properly and without missed holes

Desktop > W 10

350 instances (Feature / Faces) takes = 7 s

I bit the bullet and down loaded your file.

 

using a component to punch holes may seem like a clever idea, but just think about all the work you and the computer has to do to make a single hole.  and then going thru the same process by mirroring the components instead of the result just adds insult to injury.

 

I deleted all the history up to the point shown in the screen capture below.  already at this point it takes a measurable amount of time to compute the model.  it's not going to get better as the model progresses.  This is the beginning of your performance issues.

 

I've attached the process I would employ as an example. the compute is instantaneous.

and now your saying, yeah, but to change the hole size all I have to do is edit the linked component and everything updates.

 

all you have to do in my example is change this one dimension-

Do you have particular reason behind placement of sketches on centerlines  instead of on the surface?
