Pattern Parting Line

I am reverse engineering an elbow for a 100 year old engine and I will be making patterns, core boxes and follow board so I can cast a new elbow. I modeled the elbow easily enough but I can't figure out how to split the body for a parting line. The original is very rusty and there is no evidence of the parting line but just guessing it looks like it was parted roughly along the X Y plane. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I think that it will not be a straight cut, but following the curve above or sideways.   gr mango

I did not mark this as solved so why is it? The pattern needs to be pulled from the sand mold so your drawing won't work.

If you use Silhouette Split it finds the split on the outside of the elbow.

But it fails on the other side and I'm not sure the other side can be done with a simple line of draw split line. Looks like there are undercut areas.

Without the flanges you can see the split would need to follow your sketch line and be undercut. Or are you going to use extra loose cores for this area?

If you project the body to a sketch you can use the profile to extrude a set of surfaces and you can see the problem area.

If you can change the angle in sketch2 to 135° you can get a simple line of draw split line.

@mango.freund  That's close but I think these 2 parts would need splitting along the middle of the form. Apart from the text there are still undercuts here.

you are right --- thanks for the recognition. our friend did not ask for this work on this scale. but he also apologized because he gave me a redemption too early - because he didn't want to do it at all. as he embeds the shape in sand, a small undercut can be corrected quickly. greetings mango

@HughesTooling Thank you, that helped a lot. I have never used Silhouette Split before, it was just what I needed. I could not change the angle of the pipe but I hadn't included a detail that was on the original until now. It has a flat area in the inside corner that fills in the under cut area. That feature enabled me to make a splitting surface to split the pattern. The core box will be easy from here.

@mango.freund Thank you for your help as well but split the way you have it, I don't see how you could pull the pattern from the sand in the text area.
