Pattern a linked component without losing constraints?

I can pattern a linked component, I choose "component" from the drop down menu. But after I do this I can grab the new components and drag them anywhere leaving me wondering what the use of the pattern function was. I could just as well just import a new component several times since I still have to constrain every single part by hand. If I break the link of the component I can suddenly pattern the component as a body instead, this works and it stays contained, but I don't want to break the link. Is there any way I can pattern components that are linked and still have the constrains?

The first (seed)instance of the inserted(linked) component will have to be assembled to something using a joint from the Assemble menu preferably before patterning.

The patterned instances can then be assembled to the 1st one with a rigid group joint. To be honest, this should really be an option in the pattern tool, because in the vast amount of use cases (99% ?) this is directly the next step user would perform.

Thanks a lot, seems obvious now that you say it, it had me going crazy.
