Overlapping Sheet Metal Flanges

I'm trying to create a part where 2 flanges of a sheet metal part overlap so that they can be fastened together and create a more rigid box. The attached image shows what I'm trying to do. Unfortunately, the tabs get fused together and the model cannot be unfolded. Is there any what to prevent this or should I be using some other method that will avoid this?

Thanks
