I've noticed that if one turns of history many of the operations appear in the folders in the browser.  Do those operations also behave in a sequential manner without a time line?

I don't really get you here but if you're in Timeline mode, all things (even those in the browser tree) follow the timeline

In Direct Modeling mode the features are added in chronological order.  Editing an existing feature doesn't add a new feature.

p.s. The chronological order is specific to the component, not the project.
