need help usaing a canvas on a sketch

I am attempting to trace an image, but I don't understand how to get it on the screen when I am in sketch mode.

I import the image as a canvas, size it and everything looks fine. You can see in the 1st screenshot the canvas "cyclone toy base" is in the list of canvases and has display through selected.

But, as you can see in the 2nd pic, as soon as I select "edit sketch" the canvas disappears and in fact the entire list of canvases is gone from the list of objects so I can't even turn it on or selectable.

I couldn't find anything in the help system to help, all I could find was mention of using "display through" but that doesn't make any difference.

Is there a trick to being able to trace around an image in sketch mode?

Well, I guess I withdraw the question. Apparently some sketches allow it and some don't as when I started another sketch, this time the canvas stayed visible.

Hard to tell from your screen captures but in order for the Canvas to be available while you are editing the sketch, the Canvas must be attached BEFORE the sketch you are editing in the timeline.

Timeline order. 

Canvasses must be to the left of the new sketch, and visible.

True for a New sketch, 

not true for editing any earlier sketch.
