Moving to Fusion 360, i have a few questions

Hi,

I would like to thank anyone who answers my questions in advance. I have been mulling over these for weeks now, and have not come to a certain conclusion at all.

I'm a CAD guy with 26+ years (God I feel old) of experience in many different fields. I use AutoCAD, Inventor, Plant 3D, 3DS, Revit, Recap, Navisworks, and a few others in a professional setting.

I am happy with these packages when I'm not paying for them, and companies that contract my work have given me a computer and the necessary software to do my duties.

I work in mainly construction and manufacturing (for construction), but I have in recent years been getting my own workload from other sectors.

I have a real need to purchase my own software now. I don't necessarily need to have the full-blown packages above. but as long as I can 3D model, create 2D Drawings from 3D models, and create 2D drawings where a 3D model isn't required, or the source files are just 2D. basically I produce drawings from the respective programs, unless there's something odd going on, and i use AutoCAD to just bring in the models, or 2D exports of views from the other programs to make the drawing "work"

generally i dont use the "advanced" features of Inventor. i use the parts and assemblies, to create 3D models of things, and create 2D drawings.

I have been looking increasingly at getting Fusion 360, with either AutoCAD LT or Revit LT Suite (forward requirements on Revit unknown at the moment). I have never used fusion 360 in anger before, and never to produce a drawing from, only a 3D model.

I am more than versed in the limitations of LT Suite compared to AutoCAD and Revit, but i'm not sure how Fusion 360 will work as a way to replace all my 3D modeling workflows except for Revit.

generally, I don't use the "advanced" features of Inventor. I pretty much use it for creating 3D Solids of parts into assemblies which get sent for manufacture (3D Print, CNC, Sheet Metal Fabrication, Etc) and export the entire shrinkwrapped assembly or 2D views of it, to AutoCAD to Revit to be added into the "project" drawings. and more increasingly to product renders, and basic animation "fly around, rotating the assembly/part, Exploded view etc)  and also to create 2D drawings as well.

Now the main reason for looking at Fusion 360 and AutoCAD LT is cost. if I can produce an output that is close to or exactly like what I do now 9with a different workflow) for approx 25% of the cost of the full Product Design Suite per year, per license (looking at employing an apprentice) then I would be mad at this point in my company development to not at least consider switching to Fusion 360 and LT Suite....

i'll download the Trial of Fusion 360 for business, but i would be interested in your thoughts as fellow CAD guys. what do you think, and how many use a similar set of programs professionally?

Hi,

since you obviously know your requirements, I think that from your own experience with Fusion you can get the best insights.
