Move to Snap Point

Hi

I'm new to fusion 360 and I'm trying to get to grips with it. I come from a Sketch-up background but generally don't have much expertise in this kind of software.

I find that positioning components is extremely difficult since the registration marks (vector corners, center marks etc don't work as well as sketchup or even 2D graphical programs such as adobe illustrator/photoshop).

I've created the graphic attached to illustrate my problem.

Clicking to move a component and then selecting a corner vector point and then a vector point I want to move it to (snap to) results in it ignoring my request and it just ends up in middle-earth on a hobbit adventure.

Key

SP = Snap Point

Can anyone give me any more information about this issue?

Many thanks 🙂

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Fusion community, and thanks for what might be my favorite bug report ever 🙂

It looks like this component's courageous journey is actually due to it moving along 1 axis instead of 3. This is what should happen when you select one of the arrow manipulators; but when you select that central point manipulator, I think it should be moving that point directly to the position you select (as you expected). I'll follow up with the dev team on why this isn't happening - might just be a simple issue we can fix in an update.

In the meantime: if you're moving objects from one reference point to another, it's probably actually worth using the dedicated Point to Point move type (available from the Move Type menu in the Move command). This has the added advantage of having a feature in the timeline that 'remembers' which points you clicked, so if you go back in time and change the model in anyway, the move feature should intelligently update to the new point locations.

Let us know if that isn't clear, or if you had any follow up questions.

Thanks!

Jake

No problem! Here's clarification of what I think is happening, btw:

Actually, might not be as simple as that... anyway, we're looking into it now 🙂

having snaps, like those that have been in AutoCAD for DECADES, would alleviate a metric cr@pton of problems with moving objects and overall making an accurate drawing without having made the entire process a complicated PITA.

100% agree! Has this been solved now? I'm having similar issues.

I realize this is a two-year old thread... but didn't anybody ever ask him why he's Moving components relative to each other instead of using a Joint?
