it would be nice to be able to choose the number of cpopies just next to the copy box in the move copy dialog box.

This can be done with a (rectangular) pattern.
Afterwards, the instances can then be positioned as desired.

As mentioned, this can be done with the rectangular pattern and is rather simple. I have a screencast attached showing the process. Hope this helps.
