Move bodies from one component to another

Hi all,

I am pretty experienced in Fusion (several hundered hours at least in the app) and this has never happened to me before. I have a relatively complex model that I'm working on with many components. I'm trying to move some bodies from the main 'bodies' tab in browser to another component that I have created, but it's not letting me. When I drag and drop, just nothing changes. I get the feeling this is a classic ebkac error... (error between keyboard and chair). So, is it infact a user error or is something else wrong? Thanks for the help!

Thank you! This solution works perfectly for me.

One other thing- if the component you are trying to move it to doesn't already have a "Bodies" folder, you need to generate that folder by making a body within the component (it doesn't matter what, and you can delete it afterward).

Hi Peter,

it's little me again. Little behind on this post, but.....
In some files I can move Body, eg - from one Component Folder to other, or from Bodies Folder move Body to Component, by simply clicking Left and Hold, Drag where I want it. It shows blue Separation Line as I move, and when I come to the destination folder, I drop it in that one.

But, in some files i can't?
Destination folder change color when I am over it, but don't accept moving thing.

In some files, I cant even move/position Components Folders up or down?
Please help.
Hope you are fine in this confusing times.

Hi, I'm a newb doing a Udemy course and boy am I glad to have uncovered these posts here.

What I'd like to add to BlockheadSuper's reply is that I did not have a body in the target components folder(!), so I had no bodies in my target folder for the 'move to group' facility to be able to do its job. Oh no!

Work-around:

I selected the target component and extruded out one minor part of my model by 1mm. So that got me a body in my target component folder. From there 'move to group' worked just fine. I then deleted the extraneous 1mm body.

I selected all the sketches individually, then dragged them in to the correct component. After seconds and seconds Fusion computed the sketches move and now everything is together as it should originally have been.

HTH!

If you remove all features in time line and press "Ctrl+Z", you will be able to move bodies from one component to another! It was, so easy!

What I found on my own:
Inability to move Components Up/Down or Body to/out from Components is restricted by Design History. If there is any item after cursor (grayed ones) you cant move Bodies or Components. what is understandable.
Clear unused items in Design History and all is good.

That was a great post, and in the 4 years since, I'm not sure if this basic lesson is front and center in the popular training tools (YouTube collective), or maybe I missed it too. I will admit that my first step was to just start drawing things, then looking up the method I couldn't figure out as needed. I know almost none of those answers yet, but I am going to find out. I am starting here:

No affiliation, just found this channel.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an intuitive way to do this (like drag and drop), but this is the work around to keep you from having to recreate the whole project again from scratch. Here is my solution: COPY > PASTE > REMOVE.

  1.  Select the bodies you wish to move.
  2.  Right click and hit COPY.
  3.  Go to the Component you wish to move them to and PASTE on the "Bodies" folder. Then expand that folder to ensure they were added.
  4. Hit "Cancel" in the pop-up Move Box to close it.
  5. Go back to the original bodies you copied, select them again.
  6. Toggle "V" to turn off visibility (in case you are worried this will mess up something in the timeline) or right-click and REMOVE.

Try it and see if it works for you.

This issue was tripping me up but I will say that it is absolutely possible to move bodies into a new component though it isn't as as simple as a drag and drop. The UI does imply that is possible but it isn't.

I have been accomplishing this in most cases by right clicking on individual bodies in the parent component and copying them. I can then right-click and paste in a destination component. This usually works but when it doesn't you need to do the same steps, but first select "create base feature" from the create menu. This allows you to cut and paste an object independent of any timeline restrictions.  In either case, you will need to go back to the originating object after you have successfully copied it into the new component,  and right-click  on it in the timeline and select "remove" in order to prevent redundant objects in your model. I just reorganized an entire model using this approach and it's now all tucked away in tidy components. I did have to use both methods detailed above, and I'm not sure I can really explain why.

Another tip that can make this easier: If you have a long list of bodies in the main component that you are trying to move to a new component, right click on the first body and select "create components from bodies". This will simultaneously move the body and create the new component that the other related bodies will be cut and pasted into.

I know this is an old post but it's still the first one you get when you google the question.  This was doing my head in for some time but I've found a workaround that may be helpful to someone.

When you can't move bodies it's generally because of dependencies that aren't obvious (as many other posters have already described).  And in an ideal world, everyone's models are pristine and structured beautifully with no mistakes.  But back in the real world, that's not always the case.  Anyway, here's what I did – worked for me:

1. Activate the target component (where you want the bodies to end up).

2. Select the set of bodies you want to move.

3. Choose move/copy, leaving all positional parameters alone, but check the box "make a copy".  This will copy the bodies into your new component, at the same positions.

4. Then "remove" (not delete) the original bodies from the original component.

Not ideal, but gets the job done.

Happy modeling.

-Jason.

What is the technical difference between remove and delete? Does "remove" preserve dependent modeling info?

Remove only removes it from that point forward in the timeline (there will be an additional remove feature in the timeline). That cleans up the browser and frees up memory.

Yes it preserves all dependencies.

I've also found when you finished a sketch, if you move that exact sketch to the component it will shift all of the bodies attached/Extruded from it. Dragging all to the desired components including sketches done based off the original sketch.
