Move a sketch lower in the browser

I mistakenly created a sketch in a the top level of a project tree.  There's no bodies/geometry yet made from it but I can't just move it down to the component folder that I want it to reside in.  The whole moving of sketches process seems to be a typical source of confusion for the new user.   Am I missing something(again) or will I have to redraw the sketch in the component I want it to exist in?

I think you will need to share your design.  In general, if there are no references in this sketch (e.g. sketched on a face of the component you are trying to reorder into, or edges projected into it), you should be able to restructure the sketch.  When restructure is limited, it is always because of a reference of some kind.

I was able to copy the sketch contents and paste them into a sketch lower in the tree.  I've been working on the ducumant since then so I don't know how helpful it will be but here it is anyway.  Some other issues are the sketch I get from selecting a face of an object does not show the border lines of said face and when I make some modifications to it I cannot trim away portions of the border I want gone.

On the whole, the experience is rather troublesome to accomplish very minor modifications.

Just dont trim. I am not kidding!

I know this is not easy to do and after 25 years of CAD I still have to fight hard to resist the urge of triming a sketch to exacly mimic the countuour of the shape I amtrying to extrude, revolve etc.

However, as Fusion 360 allows you to extrude multiple slections at ones and auto-joins those that are adjacent, there is not much need to spend that additional time on neatly trimming the sketch.

It might look a little messy or lets say unusual, but in my experience behaves much more stable and saves quite a bit of time.

Right.  Okay, I'll do so.  Thanks.  But I'm still wondering why such a sketch won't allow such edits.

The reason why you cannot trim projected geometry is worth discussing.  The reason is because that geometry is entirely driven by the edge/face/etc you projected into the sketch.  You want it to update only when the external source is edited.  Consider the following scenario:

Start with an offset plane:

projected geometry edit 1.png

sketch on that plane, and project an edge into the plane:

projected geometry edit 2.png

If we allowed you to trim that line:

projected geometry edit 3.png

Then, what is the expected behavior if the source edge changes:

projected geometry edit 4.png

projected geometry edit 5.png

Now, you can definitely do "Break Link" on this curve, and trim it/move it to your heart's content.  But it will not beassociative to the source edge any more.  As they say:  "you cannot have your cake and eat it too".

Hi Jeff,

It's slowly sinking in.  The breaking link step is the crux of it I think.  I started over again and offset a plane, made a sketch and then tried to move it down the tree into a new component.  What I think is the sketch being 'on' an offset plane inside a higher level is locked to the plane.  Is the architecture of the application such that making a move like that is impossible?  What I've been accustomed too is creating the objects I want and then later collecting them into logical groups.   As it is now it seems that one gets locked into an organization of elements from the beginning and there's no way later to make logical changes.
