Model on top of a renrence model

Hi,

Just started to use Fusion coming from Rhino. Is there any way you can model on top of an imported model. I use this when 3D printing. Often I rebuild models that I receive from customers. Therefore I would like to know how I import a Model and snap new geometry onto it. Basically rebuilding it as a solid model.

Is this possible in Fusion?

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Fusion 360 Community!

Depending on the file type, the simple answer is yes. Lets say for instance you have a SolidWorks part that you are trying to bring into Fusion 360. When you upload the .sldprt in Fusion 360, it then converts and rebuilds the part as a solid body that is now considered a Fusion design. Granted, it is a translation process so it really depends on what you are trying to upload, but in my experience unless its a really really large referenced assembly of some sort it usually uploads without a problem. I went ahead and showed the workflow for uploading a non-native file into Fusion 360 below, check it out! Also, below is a link that shows all possible file types that you can import into Fusion 360.

Thanks for the reply James - good information!

Coming from Rhino I'm use to work with layers - so I would import a 3d model and put it in a separate layer and then lock the layer. Then only use the imported modes to snap new geometry onto. How would that go in Fusion. When I snap new geometry onto the imported model it starts to boolean difference from the imported model..

I'm a newbie! Also, is it possible to use a Gumball in Fusion? I would like to move edges with a pivot which is possible in 123D. But in Fusion I can only Push/Pull?

Thanks for you help!

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm not 100% sure what Gumball is to be honest! If you would like, I can have a quick chat with you outside of the forum and walk through some of the basics and see if we can't get you oriented with what you are trying to accomplish! If you would like to do this, just PM me your contact info and I will get a hold of you. Perhaps some other users have some insight as well that are more familiar with Rhino and 123D Catch?

Thanks,

You have a few more options with Move if you select Do not capture design history.

When you are in direct mode you have an option to select faces on the Move dialog. You use set pivot to position and orient the manipulator.

Also take a look at components as a work around for layers. See this Screencast.

Mark.

Edit should have said use components and isolate instead of layers.

If you are coming from Rhino I am assuming your models are free form NURBS ore even T-Spline models. As I don't use Rhino I cannot say what export format you'd best use.

In Fusion 360 you can also work with T-Splines and based on your description I believe that is what you want to do. To create a T-Spline, go to the "Create" menu and select "Form".

I believe the necessary tools are there to start approximating an exsting body using T-Splines.
