Many crashes all of a sudden

Today Ive been getting lots of crashes doing various things: creating sketches and construction objects, rearranging the browser, messing with the timeline, always complete spinning rainbow crashes out of nowhere doing typical things. Estimate I've had 20 crashes today. Never had more than one every few days before.

Have you tried rebooting your computer rather than just restarting Fusion?

Its just a "Beta" software, remember 😉

You expect it to work?

Sorry, had to give a poke.

Yah, rebooted several times. I have some other funky things happening in a particular offending file as well. See my “Uncommanded browser collapse” comment . Certainly some of Fusions issues will be related to specific files (corruption, unexpected data structures) rather than being general bugs everyone is susceptible to. I suspect this might be one of those.

I wonder if there is a "file verification" tool in Autodesk's toolbox?

I took a look at the reports submitted by your e-mail address and I'm seeing two from today. Are you hanging or crashing? If you are crashing, can you submit the error reports?

Is this all happening in one design? Can you share the design?

Does that design have a lot of errors or warning in the timeline? It may be helpful to resolve yellow/red warning/errors in the timeline before doing anything else.

One last question, are you using a space mouse? One of the error reports seems like it may be related to this type of peripheral device. I look forward to your reply.

Thanks,

Hi Nathan,

Over the past few days I've been experiencing lots and lots of both hangs and crashes: hangs being spinning rainbow wheel and then nothing else unless I force quit the app. I've let this spin for over an hour in some cases and it never stopped hanging (spinning). To me crashes are when fusion unexpectedly quits out to the finder and I get a message box from Autodesk asking me to explain what happened.

Whenever given the opportunity after a crash I always submit at least a brief report to Autodesk, using the crash reporter box. If I have to force quit (hang), I get Apple's default error screen and I always accept it.

I can share the design in strict confidence.

No, there are NO errors in my timeline, am fastidious about that, and "compute all" always gives a clean result, I make sure of that regularly too. That being said, in my iterative creative design process I do an lot of strategic and tactical timeline and browser reordering and restructuring because WITH FUSION WE CAN! Yay! Again, I always make sure it all stays perfectly clean.

I use a 3D connection space mouse. I'm on a latest model iMac 5K running all the latest.

regards, Nigel

Didi you want the Fusion diagnostics or the reports from OS X's logs from Console)? or what?

Over the past couple of days, have all the crashes been associated with a single design or are there multiple designs? If it's not design specific, then there no need to share the design with me. If it is just one design, feel free to send it to nathan DOT chandler AT autodesk DOT com. I'll be happy to take a look.

I'm wondering if it might be worthwhile to test some environmental factors:

-a manual clean unisntall/re-install (bad install or update)

-disconnecting AND disabling the 3Dconnexion hardware to see if there is any change

-toggle the sketch color preview off in the preferences if it is enabled

I hope this helps, I look forward to your update.

Thanks,

As mentioned before, its with a single design. Haven't tested other files because I am doing just one project, although its getting to be a fairly big and complicated one.

Sketch colour preview is always off, unless I accidentally hit the N key(!)

I have disabled some Mac OS extensions including "magicprefs" (for magic mouse) and a few others. Will disable 3D connexion and deinstall reinstall and let you know.

However, I wouldn't be having fun anymore if I can't use my 3D connection space mouse!

Will advise back in due course.

Thx.

Hi Nathan @innovatenate,

Did the deinstall/reinstall by-the-book and turned off flash and magic mouse extensions on my mac (just in case!).

deleted 3dconenxion and uninstalled and unplugged that device.

restarted, updated Fusion to Aug 17 update, restarted, began work

Was OK for an hour so I reinstalled my 3d connexion, worked for several hours, now had a new freeze.

I sent a detailed message with the crash report.

Its all been just one file that Ive been working on.

If you send me your email I will privately share file with you.

Thanks!

Nigel

There's a note in the below form about today's update and an issue related to space mice slated to be fixed on Aug 24th.

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/design-validate-document/fusion-crashing/td-p/6504240

Today's update note:

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/design-validate-document/august-17-2016-update-now-available/td-p/6505...

It looks like there was a known graphics issue we just patched.

@daniel_lyall Make sure you are on the latest version 2.0.2317 in Help > About. I also couldn't help but notice that your graphics driver on the Windows machine is from November of 2015. Is there a new driver for that bad mama jamma  of a graphics card? Your issues seem to be related to sketch and to graphics mostly.

If you have any reproducible steps or designs, feel free to share them with me (e-mail below).

The below suggestions for graphics driver and sketch color preview may help.

@Anonymous My e-mail is nathan DOT chandler AT autodesk DOT com Feel free to send me a design file to review. I'm happy to take a look.

Taking a look at the newly submitted error reports, I can't help but notice that any associated "bucketed" report seem to becoming from Mac OS. There does not appear to be any known defects associated to any of the reports. Looking through your notes there seems to be a high percentage that happen during some sort of sketch operation.

Do you have the sketch color preview enabled in the preferences? Perhaps it would help to disable this (if it is enabled).

I was also wondering if it may be helpful to test a different graphics driver setting.

I hope these suggestions help. If not, please let me know I'm happy to keep digging! Thank you for reporting this!

@innovatenate ...but after some time a new glitch appeared.

I couldn't exit a sketch. I'd hit "end sketch", sketch dialogue goes away, dialogue pops back up, sketch never leaves, can still edit it. Try again to end sketch several times, no can do. Hit command Q several times and program finally exits somehow without crashing. Restart and things seem ok for now.

Right, I hadn't turned off the coloring constraints preview, I somehow thought you meant colorize components and made sure that was off, which it was.  I will turn off preview for colouring constrained lines in sketches and see how that goes.

I've shared my file with you.

Thanks!

I took a look a the design today. Played around for a little over an hour and I was able to generate a single crash. However, I was not able to reproduce the crash a second time.  In a previous life I designed similar things so, I was having a pretty good time testing. I really like the approach of using the mesh body just as reference to build the design around. The timeline looks really clean, no warnings or errors.

So far I haven't been able to pin anything concrete down. Are you finding stability is better with the spacemouse and the sketch color preview disabled? I thought I should check in with you to see if you are fairing any better. I look forward to your update.

Thanks!

Things are a lot better today with spacemouse and constrained line review off for the time being. I also turned off the new mesh preview.

I have magicprefs running on my mac so my apple mouse can have a third "button" to do orbits and pans with, it doesn't seem to trip fusion so Im doing quite OK now.

Even so, looking forward to trying Aug 24 spacemosue fix!  Hopefully it'll be a keeper!

I'll keep you posted if anything changes.
