manipulating an obj scan import

Greetings, me again.  Looking for hints on manipulating an imported obj file.  This is the second part I am reverse engineering from obj data, and not running across more efficient ways to do this.  I import the obj, and end up measuring points and tediously manipulating it and rotating it until I get near 0 distance from the xy plane.  Whats the most recommended way of doing this with obj or stl data?  (is there a difference with stl or obj?  I can do both).  Not finding anything here or on youtube surprisingly.

By the way - I notice the scan data is faking me out.  I have an stl and obj file.  The obj files are much larger, but they are still triangular facets.  What the heck?  Why would that be?  And I can't believe the capability of Fusion to deal with large numbers of facets......I have 1.2 million!!

Hey Whisperer!  Thanks for the reply.  My particular scan is around 90MB!  But my question is such a noob question, It can be regarding any simple mesh data on import.  In general I see a lot of tutorials importing, but not actually MOVING the imported mesh to a certain location and orientation. 

 

For example, I want to bring in, say, a "pyramid" shape.  I want to scale it, and place the base of the pyramid on my x,y plane.  maybe have the tip on 0,0.

While Fusion 360 does have a mesh workspace, my recommendation would be to try out Meshmixer. I am not sucre meshmixer has the functionality you are looking for, but the likelihood is higher in Meshmixer than in Fusion 360.

 

It is also understandable that the .obj format file is larger in size than a .stl file as it can contain more data types, such a UV's, textures, colors etc. That usually goes along with a little more overhead.

go to preferences mesh turn tesselation off

 

Fusion is a CAD app not a high poly mesh sculpting tool so dont expect 1 2 3 million poly models work well in Fusion

 

can you show a screenshot so I have an idea what you want? just explaining in text is pretty useless for us!
