Making a joint articulate

I put a gear on a shaft, put it through a set bearings on a frame. In all the videos they show how you can show how the joint moves but I can't figure out how to make the gear revolve around the axis. Can this be done?

When the joint dialogue is open you can pick different kinds of joints. The default is rigid, but you can change this to revolute, slider etc.

Revolute is what you need in this case.
