Making a file editable once I 'Insert into current design'

Disclaimer - I am brand new to Fusion 360:)

Can anyone help with this?

In my current design I'm working on, I used the 'Insert into current design' feature of a component I had created. Now that the component is in my current design, I can't move it or edit it because it apparently is 'read-only'.

Is there a way to change it so I can edit it and move it around?

Thanks in advance!

You need to break the link.

Just to add some clarity.

When a design is inserted, it is read-only for a reason. This is a linked file and can be used in other designs as well.

If you want to edit it, open the original design and make changes. The designs that reference it, via insertion, will then tell the user that the linked file is out of date. The user then updates the referencing design.

This image shows that "Terminal Cup" has been edited and the user should update the referencing design "speaker box with terminal cup"

You also say you cannot move the designs. This would be very strange. So perhaps you aren't aware of the options available for moving inserted designs?

Methods to move any component that is not grounded:

1. Drag it on the screen.

2. Start Move, switch to Component filter in the Move dialog, select the component, and move it.

3. Use a Joint to position the component relative to another component.

If your inserted design is an assembly, you may need to add Joints or make it a Rigid Group.

@Anonymous I need you to make a video using Autodesk Screencast or other screen capture tool. I have to see what you are doing to find out why the component won't move.

Thanks,

Are you selecting the component in the browser, then right clicking to get the Move command, or are you selecting the Move command in the menu or marking menu and selecting in the drawing? If you access the command from the top or marking menus, you can’t select in the browser <edit> unless you make sure that the component filter is set- you may be trying to selct bodies. I think the filters default to the last used, and it's easy, at least for me, to overlook how they are set.  <edit>

Is it possible you have inadvertently made the component non-selectable (tiny red & white icon in the browser)?

@Oceanconcepts

If you cannot move components by the following workflow, I need a video from you too. The result you describe is not what I see in testing.

1. Start move command from Modify/RMB menu.

2. Set dialog filter to Component

3. Pick from browser.

4. Complete the move command.

Thanks,

Phil, you're right- if you select the component icon in the dialog it works from the browser, but those options are easy to miss.

Thanks guys for all the responses.

I was able to move it by right clicking the component in the tree!

Highlighting the component and right clicking, then selecting 'move' wouldn't do it.

Thanks again,

I need to explain what is happening for you. This is as-designed behavior, you just don't know what's going on yet.

When you click on a component in canvas, and your selection filter is set to Select All, the pick that is promoted is FACE.

In this image, the face was picked. This is a face selection.

There are three ways to perform component selection.

1. Double click a face. This will select the whole component.

2. Set Selection filter to Component. (see image below) Then select in canvas with a single click or box select.

3. Pick the component in the browser.
