I cannot find a way to make a component transparent in an assembly.  Yes, you have access to the opacity control for bodies in a design, but not for components.  And yes, you can open the component, change it's opacity, save it, return to the assembly and get latest, but that forces you to increase the rev of that component twice (if you change it back) when you aren't actually changing the part.

I have looked and looked and I just can't believe that you can't make a component transparent.  Am I mistaken?

I am assuming that your components are External, linked into the assembly.  Add an appearance to the entire component, in the Browser, of Glass.

if you don't want to have to update/version a linked component every time you change the opacity, one work around would be to place the linked component as a subcomponent of a local component.  then you can change the opacity of the local component without having to do multiple saves to the linked component.
