Make copied component unique again

Anonymous

Hi,

When finalizing my assembly, I noticed that my original idea (that two components could be a copy of each other), is no longer valid. Now I want to change one of them, without changing the other (without having to start over again with the joints and things like that...). Possible? How?

Thanks!

I would not know of any workarounds to accomplish that.

@dhr.maarten.van.damme - there is a slightly kludgy way to do this by creating a new component, using Boundary Fill to populate the body from the original.  Then, you can make changes to the new component, and it will still be associative to the original:

Are those component linked components linked components? If yes, just break the link of the copied one.

That would have been the easiest way, but unfortunately I copy-pasted (pasted, no pasted 'as new') the object from within my assembly (i.e. exactly as shown by

Okay. That will not work on internal copy / pasted components. Just to make sure for later readers: If you insert a design and than copy /past it, you can still break the link on the pasted component. No need for multiple inserts.

Try right clicking on the component in question in the browser and then locate 'Make Independent' in the drop down menu that appears.  This should make the copied component independent of the originator component.

That only works in direct modeling mode.

True but depending on the situation, it could be worth it.  Depends on how much you love that timeline.  It's been useful to me a few times anyway.
