Make an entire component translucent

Can this be done? Not just an individual body, but in an 'assembly' I want to make some components translucent to visual assist in construction.

you can set the opacity of a component, even if it is a sub-assembly, as long as your components are "local" (not linked to an external design).  If you are using external components, you will have to set the opacity inside that design, and update to that version of the component.
