Maintaing links between copied objects

Is it possible to create a copy of an object (including a mirror) that will change if you alter the orginal. There appears to be some linkage when you say do an extrude on multiple faces in a sketch. Then if you change it on and one of the extrudes and it changes all. But if you copy an object and then cut away part of the orginal the copy doesnt change. Quite often in my designs I have very repetative elements (like spindles in chair backs) and after I copy them I would like any change to refelect to a set. Something when I was using sketchup that was extremly useful.

it's hard to say without seeing some more information, but I can talk about one scenario - copy/paste of a Body.  That operation is a timeline operation.  It executes at a specific point in time in the history.  Any operations that occur after that point in time will not be reflected in the copy, because that operation occurs before that modification.  If you roll the timeline back before the copy/paste, then the copy will be affected.  You can control this.  I'll put together a little screencast to illustrate, and post it shortly.

here is a screencast.  I show:

  • copy/paste of a body
  • make a change to the source (a hole) after the copy/paste - this only affects the source
  • make a change to the copy (a fillet) after the copy/paste - this only affects the copy
  • roll back the end of the timeline to before the copy paste
  • add a fillet to the body
  • roll the timeline marker back to the end - you will see that the fillet is applied to the copy as well

I think what you want to do is create your parts as components instead of just bodies.  This way when you create copies of that component, any change to that component will propagate to all the copies.  The important thing to remember is that you have to copy/mirror the component and not just the body inside that component.

There is a ton of information about how to do this in the Fusion documentation, so I'll leave this as an exercise for the reader.  😉
