Layers ,Sketches, concepts oh my....

Even for simple things y sketches are getting really cluttered....

In Rhino when I draw I make lots and lots of layers that I can individually turn on and off for visability, snap etc....

I might have a layer for the part outline, for the screw holes, for the  case holes etc....

 

Conceptually I can see how having multiple sketches is the equvalent of this, but I'm missing a key concept...

 

With layers eveythign is in the "same" sketch.... ie I can dimension the holes from the outline then hide the outline when its cluttering the world....  In my ideal world you'd add layers to sketches..... since I think thats unlikely I'll ask for advice on how to organize things...

 

Maybe I'm missing something but I'd like to understand how to move sketch features back and forth between multiple sketches....

IE I sketch an outline.... then using that ourline sketch I'd like to draw a mounting hole dimenstioned fromt he outline, but likely on a differnt sketch...  Then I might copy these mouting holes to another sketch to define a recess and offset them to provide clerance....

I want the ability to not see all the clutter and turn individual parts of a sketch on and off or to refernce from one sketch to another....

(I partially just answered my question, I did not realize that sketches could dimension or constrain off of other sketches....

Another issue seems to be one can only have one sketch active at one time.. so I'd like to be able to be able to move sketch entities between sketches.... maybe I want to draw all the details on one sketch then move some of the features off to other sketches.... so I an control visability and clutter...

General advice on how to manage this would be welcome....In some of my more complex rhino designs I can have as many as 20 or 30 layers and switch them on/off of mvoe things between them with single clicks.....

I think workflow questions are very dependent on the type of designs you are doing and personal preferences, but these are very good questions. 

 

My #1 recommendation:  Use a component structure, and keep sketches inside the components to which they pertain. The best way to do this is to activate the component prior to making the sketch. But it is generally possible to drag sketches into a component until there are parts based on the sketches- in history/ parametric mode. In direct modeling mode you can drag and drop anywhere. 

 

Starting a new sketch and then projecting elements from other sketches or parts of the model is a way to establish connections and references between sketches, which then become almost like sketch layers in Rhino. As you say, you can dimension off other sketches as well. Keeping sketches in the same component, rather than having layers in the same sketch, is just the way to keep organized in Fusion. It’s not unusual for me to have 20 or 30 sketches within a component, usually only with one visible at a time. 

 

Personally, I name my sketches and then control visibility to give a logical structure within a component. I sometimes project elements from other sketches or parts of the model to aid in positioning sketch elements like holes, then delete the projected curves to keep things clean- but I work a lot in the direct modeling environment, and am therefore less concerned about constraints. 

 

I expect you can do anything with multiple sketches in Fusion that layers would do, it’s just a different way of organizing the work.
