lattice structures in Generative design

Using AGD, I am trying to create a lattice structure in a wrench similar to the design in this link

The end goal is more about aesthetics and look rather than actual load bearing.

Lattice wrench made by within

I applied fixed constraints on the body of the wrench and I applied a force loading in the Z direction. Objective was to minimize mass. The result was unexpected. In "Manufacturing", I forgot to uncheck "unrestricted" so that may have affected the outcomes. Any suggestions?

Can you please share a screenshot of your setup geometry.

Also, constraints will influence the outcomes, as you outlined.  Also we do not use latticing as a synthesis method at this point.  Latticing can be used as a post processing operation on outcomes that are generated.

@bmfrank thanks for the reply. if there was a way to share a file with you like a .f3d file then I would be happy to. It might be useful for AGD to have some type of file format that could be shared.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks a lot for reaching out on the forum.

Maybe a different load case would be more appropriate e.g. fix the wrench head using fixed constraints on the internal surfaces of the head and then apply a load at the end of the handle to replicate the action required to loosen a bolt.

It may also be beneficial to preserve the internal surfaces (see pic below) of the wrench head similarly to the example that you provided.

Also you could include the bolt its self as an obstacle geometry (this might not be necessary).

As @bmfrank says you cannot stipulate the AI to utilize a strictly lattice structure but i think with appropriate setup it will produce something pretty visually interesting.

Hope that helps a bit.

All the best,

David
