Joint won't rotate around the axis

Hi

I'm busy with a robot (Bender from Futurama) that can rotate arms and open its belly door with a servo. I have now constructed the door and hinge, but when I make a revolute joint, the door clearly does not rotate around the axle point. As I simply extruded the hinge from the door to the frame, I was expecting the two surfaces to be parallel. I have no clue or "best method" to construct a door or hinge of this type, so I gave it my best shot, but after two weeks, I have not produced anything workable.

Any help would be much appreciated. Here is a video link to my problem: https://autode.sk/311c0XY

Your Revolve joint is parallel to the floor

it will need to be parallel to the pin.

I would create the hinge pin,

then use the centre of the pin and the centre of the pin tunnel to hinge the door, as in real life.

Might help....

For Proper motion, You need to try with AS-BUILT JOINTS. This Feature will give you the desired Result while Stay all part in their position.

Try the AS-BUILT JOINT Feature and select both bodies and place Revolve feature on the Door center /Axis.

Hopefully, this solve the issue.

Hi. The two flat surfaces of the hinge assembly is parallel to each other, and that is what I used for the hinge. Granted, the lower and upper part of the hinge is not parallel, but is (should be) perpendicular to the axis as they share a common origin.

I found the solution  in the next post.

Thank you for the advice and I would be glad to see if there is another solution!

Hi

Thank for the advice, I have accepted this as the solution as it worked. It took me a while to grasp as the door axis is not selectable as a "Component." (I have tried to make it revolve around that axle...) And then I selected the inner face of the cylinder more by accident than by purpose and lo and behold, it worked! I'm not sure it would work if it were not for the fact that is a hollow cylinder, but I am happy.

Now I can fool around with getting my "servo" action to work, but I will try first before ask for help!

Thank you for the offer. I have accepted a solution! I am sure you will tell me in a flash the problem when looking at the file, but I will spare you trouble for now unless you really would like to see the file! (Frankly it is a bit embarrassing to share such a messy file  - I design, fail, try, try something else and so it gets really crazy!)

Hi,

Nice to hear the joint is now working as desired.

More or less made each (most) of us such experiences.
