Joint help please

Hi all,

 

the attached screenshot shows a ramp plate and 3 drive pins, I am trying to drive the plate with the pins but have had no joy. The ultimate aim is for the ramp plate to spin faster than the drive pins which will force the drive pins to ride up the ramps in the ramp plate.

 

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Hi @Anonymous,

 

First you must remember to ground one component. Then you could use the Pin-Slot joint for the Pins. If you want to know how to use the Pin-Slot joint, watch this:

Based on your description and the image I am assuming that you want the pins to travel upwards as the ramp plate rotates/

It looks like you are using a contact set.

 

I personally would stay away from contact sets and would use a motion link to do this.

A motion link will link the rotational movement of the ramp plate to the vertical movement of the pins.

 

The pins would have to have a sliding joint with properly set joint limits.

The Ramp plate would need a revolute joint, also with proerly set joint limits.

Now that I re-read your post, I see that you want to do exactly the opposite.

I am not sure that can be done with a motion link.

 

Using a contact set is a natural approach and should work, however I helped a number of users with their designs/assemblies and my recommendation would be not trying to simulate this motion and stay away from contact sets.

 

Contact sets are demanding in terms of computing power and as you design gets more complex that will have a noticable performance.

In conjunction with regular joints in a more complex assemblies I've seen these behave in rather unpredicable ways.

Thanks Ben but I am looking for a full 360 degree rotation, as far as I know the pin-slot can only handle linear motion.
