Interesting Intersections

Just wanted to share this piece which was a result of my curiosity to see what could been done with a bitmap image I had download.

First, the image was used as a Decal wrapped almost half way around a cylinder.

This was rendered in a front orthographic to get the highest contrast image possible. (This image now has the necessary distortion)

That rendered image was put into photoshop, scaled 400%, cropped, and whatever adjustments needed to get a black on white image.  Saved a .jpg.

Opened the image in Inkscape and used Path/TraceBitmap. Made one change in the dialogue box, input .540 for the threshold.

Exported this as a .svg file and Inserted it into Fusion and scaled  it to fit match the Decal.

Extrude... Splitface....Push/Pull faces.

Here's the result:

two skulls 2.jpg

After completing that, it occurred to me that it could have more shape, basically by wrapping each part in a T-spline body, then pull each face out through these T-spine bodies, and do a Combine/Intersect.

Here's the result:

The following piece is another similar case where a bitmap of text was wrapped around a cylinder. In this case it (the decal) was rendered from four sides to get the images with the required distortion. After editing them in PS they where made into four .svg files in Inkscape.

In this piece we see that the 'Together Forever' thing didn't work out:

I'ts not so much the imagery that I find stunning - even though stunning it is - It's the very innovative and unusual workflow that you created to get these results. Major Kudos!

I'd love to see a video tutorial on that!

Thankyou very much guys.

Here are a couple screencasts:

The first shows part of the process for the skulpture 😉

the next shows how to smash a bottle. Watch your fingers. (see next post for that one)

The creativity here, @donsmac, is incredible!  You come up with such cool ways to use Fusion that none of us here have ever thought of.  And the results are fantastic.

Now, if I ever need to break a bottle, I know how to do it.  I'm going to bookmark this one, because I know that this, or something very like this, will come up again.

Thanks for the Wednesday inspiration!

Jeff

Thanks Jeff.

If I happen to come up with something else I'll be sure to post.
