Inserted components losing their joint position after inserting

So I have a model that has inserted assemblies and I don't understand what makes me lose my joint positions. I think it happens after I try to edit in place  and it doesn't matter if I delete the inserted component and re-insert it, the positions are still jumbled so what am I doing wrong?

Do you have a small assembly that you can attach that illustrates this issue?  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

90% of the time, this is caused by an uncaptured position in the design you are trying to insert.  Open one of those designs, do you see this UI in the upper right?

This indicates that some components in this design have been moved (whether via dragging, Drive Joint, Move Component doesn't matter).  Uncaptured positions are ignored when a design is inserted into another design.  You will need to Capture Position before inserting

Thanks. this did solve my issue but it wasn't enough to capture the positions. It seems like you have to bind the parts with joints then their position is preserved. If I have a component that I've moved in the original file but after it's been inserted in the new assembly then I have trouble. is that right?

yes, that is correct.  The ideal solution is always to fully constrain components in a sub-assembly with Joints before inserting them into another design.  But, sometimes, if you are just doing a quick design, Capture Position is enough.  I do know that uncaptured positions are discarded on insert.
