Insert part into assembly whitout part timeline...

Hi,

Today, I insert part into a assembly and now I have a new icon (see picture add) with a "sub timeline" for this part; why? I don't need that.

When inserting a other part (the screw) I have a normal icon without sub timeline...

Someone may explane to me this choice? (I just made the conversion from single to multi-user storage, but I work alone)

Thanks

Hugues

In Fusion 360, when you switch from single to multi-user storage, the software introduces version control and tracking for each component. The "sub timeline" you’re seeing typically appears for components that are linked or managed differently, often to track changes or dependencies in a multi-user environment. Since you're working alone, this may not be necessary, but it still shows up as part of the system's workflow for versioning.

To remove it, you can try these steps:

  1. Right-click on the component in the browser.
  2. Check for an option to "Unlink" or "Remove from timeline" (if it’s a linked component).
  3. Alternatively, check the preferences for any multi-user or version control settings to disable unnecessary features.

The Sub-Timeline, as you call it, allows for the editing of the inserted component without the need to open it separately.  You can leave it condensed in the the shown Group and it only shows one entry in the timeline just like the screw.  You can expand the group to see the features of the inserted component. This is very powerful feature of all CAD applications which if you learn to use it, will enhance your work in Fusion

Your transition to Team Storage has nothing to do with this behavior.

Thanks for your feedback; but what's drive the "sub-timeline" display with his icon ? Because when inserting this part in an other assembly, Fusion don't show me this feature...

The video will explain one process of using the Inserted Component "Group" for editing.  I am demonstrating this with the assumption that you are using a Fusion Personal license.  With a Fusion Subscription you can use the same method or use the Edit in Place option.  The main point, at the first of the video, is to right click on the inserted component in the Browser and chose "Break Link" from the Context Menu.

If this answers your question, please select the "Accept Solution" icon on my post or if you need further help, please ask.

You only get that specific "+" symbol when you break the link to the external component (or create a timeline group manually).

I've never seen the symbol the OP shows in my designs, and I wonder what workflow he used to get that specific icon. It's definitely not the "normal" XREF icon, but it's also not the normal "+" icon.

This is not true.  Versioning has been part of Fusion from the very start, and has nothing to do with the type of storage used.  I think that the difference you are trying to describe here is the difference between "local components" (created and managed within a single design), and "external components", where a component can be contained in its own design, and inserted into a higher-level design.  Again, that was all available even with single-user storage.

Just want to make sure that we don't spread any misinformation here.

Good point!  Looking further into the symbol, it seems to be created when inserting a Base Feature into an assembly.  On one of my older models, before Insert Fastener command came around, I used to use a lot of McMaster-Carr screws.  As you can see in the screen capture, this is the symbol, represents where I inserted one of these screws.  The second screen capture shows what I see if I touch the "+", basically showing the Base Feature below the created component.

Hi John,

Thank you so much for your help, I understand, but I need to have a link between my part and my assembly because this part will be improved in the futur and so I wont have no alarm in my assembly to get the lastest version of my part... So I need to find how insert with link! How fusion decide to insert with link or not ? It's seems strange.

When you insert a component from the data panel into a current design, it will always be linked.

To get the group icon in your timeline, you'll deliberately have to break the link. Fusion does not do that on it's own!

Interesting: after found and follow this

"Insert into Current Design not linked to original external component file" subject from 2020 solved by Jeff Strater

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-support/insert-into-current-design-not-linked-to-original-exte...

I've get this text box warning message when inserting part: Designs inserted from another Hub will not be linked ...  (see screenshot attached)

But I have only 1 Hub, 1 account and I work alone!! So I feel like this comes from my recent Single to Multi storage conversion ??

Lets first clean up our terminology 😉

You hopefully moved all of your projects from Personal Storage to a Team Hub.

Personal Storage is what you had by default.

A Team Hub has to be created. I believe new user by default have a team hub.

I believe linking designs between different hubs is NOT possible.

So make sure that all of your designs have been move to the Team hub and going forward you should work with your team hub only.

If both, the design you want to link into your current design and the current design are in your team hub, you should not be encountering this problem.

If that is the case, I can tag an AD employee to look into it.

Thank you for your help!

In fact, I started my assembly in my old Personal Storage.
The next morning, I made the switch to Team Hub.  Now in Fusion I only see the Team Hub.
Then I wanted to continue my assembly work but this problem happen.

From now, every new part I create that I want to add in this assembly has this link break...

Can you help me to resume this?

Could this be related to this:

https://help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/?guid=FT-UPGRADE-PROJECTS

All my Fusion projects are "legacy project" with "closed" statut

P.S - why and just why is there a way to accept your own thing as the answer...
