Importing an actuator's STEP file and not being able to use its joints since this is a unique component with just one body

Hello,

Just started with Fusion 360 2 weeks ago.

I would like to know how Fusion 360 works when it comes to importing STEP files. I have seen several videos on youtube and got an idea about all you can do, for instance, you can find features and keep modifying the solid.

However, I still have a bunch of questions. Let's say, I would like to see how this actuator works together with my design by using its joints, but since this STEP file that I have downloaded from the supplier's website is a unique component and it has just one body, I cannot play any motion from a joint. Actually, on their website, you can download 2 different STEP files of the same product, one when the actuator is compressed and another one when it is extended.

Another issue that I have come across with this file is that it does not have access to the "find features" options, Might I be opening the file incorrectly? I just created a new component and opened it from Workspace.

It would be much appreciated if you can give me a brief explanation about what I am experiencing, or any link or source where I can get more info about this matter.

Thanks in advance

Not a native English Speaker so sorry If I do not use the proper technical terms.

hello @aferiaNLGTK , the case is very simple.

the manufacturer does not want to reveal his manufacturing secrets and so he has merged the entire body into one. solution: you can try to cut out all the parts (a lot of work) or you can use cuts to determine contours and redesign them. or both mixed. In addition, the zip seems oversized to me. you will always have charging problems.

thanks, @mango.freund for the prompt response.

I take the opportunity to ask you something related to this.

Now I need to download a different supplier's CAD file, on their website, there are different formats (3D native: Catia, Autocad. 3D neutral: STL, STEP...) so which is the format that suits Fusion 360 the most if I want to get the features, use their joints, etc.? Obviously, the fusion360 format is not an option.

Thanks

the step format is alright. in your case it is perhaps possible to search for all parts as "repair parts" and to get them in as a step file. maybe someone by "grabcad.com" already has a functional model. but maybe you will also find detailed drawings. but if you only need it as a placeholder and display model - then only cut as far as you need it to have a movable model - that is not that difficult.Unbenannt.PNG
