imported (multi component) STEP strange behaviour when rotating

I have an assembly, completely imported as a STEP file (it comes from SW originally)

The axes ar wrong so I want to re-orient the whole assembly 90 degrees. Therefore I select all, make a rigid group, then rotate. At least: that is what I want to do.

First of all: when i select the whole assy in a window, not all the components appear in the "rigid group" dialogue box. I have to select some again (I use the browser for this). That is strange but ok.

But then: All is supposed to be a rigid group, I select all components again, click "M" select a handle to rotate all and everything turns into some strange exploded view. Not the behaviour I expect from a "rigid" group.

Did I do something wrong in the proces?

screencast below to show both issues.

When you create the selection window from left to right not all items are selected. Only what is visible from the camera. To select everything just drag what window from the right to the left. This works in many Autodesk product and I guess we are expected to know 😉

Aha, it selects what is visible. This meaning that if a component is hidden behind another form the current viewpoint it is not selected?

I was used to SW and Skectchup where selecting left to right means that you select only lines/groups/whatevers which are completely within your selection window, and selecting right to left means that you select everything which has a part in your selection window as a whole.

But ok: the selection part is solved: that leaves the main part of the topic: why does the assembly "explode" on rotation even if it is made a rigid group?

I am not sure it's really just visible, bu if you want to window-select everything, right to left is definitely the way to go.

The reason why the assembly explodes is who you start moving bodies within their components rather than the components.

Make sure to select "Components" in the move tool dialogue. Then things will stay inlace as expected.

wow, thanks for the effort! I learnt a lot in that screencast.

Double click to select components instead of bodies for example, and checking in the design tree to see what type of entity is selected.

But most of all: how to use rigid group to make it really work like a rigid group.

There is so much to Fusion which works really nice once you know how to use it.
