Import multiple Solidworks assemblies

Hi,

I'd like to import multiple (independent) assembly designs that have been created with Solidworks. Some of the assemblies have more than 100 parts (including subassemblies) so I'd quite like to be able to import them as a large lump rather than finding the referenced parts for each assembly individually. I've been able to upload all the .SLDPRT files, but when I try to import an assembly, Fusion asks me for the reference parts and subassemblies.

Is there a way to upload all the assemblies and then resolve conflicts/file locations using the previously loaded parts?

Sorry that links faulty, start here and look for Data Translation import and export under the topics.

@brianrepp any idea why the first link above doesn't work, it is the correct address but using it as a link fails!

Thanks Mark

Alas, no. I can import individual assemblies without any trouble. Right now, I'm trying to import perhaps 500 files, which include about 100 assemblies (some of which are sub-assemblies that are then used in assemblies themselves). Because there are so many and some of the assemblies are quite complex, I don't want to have to spend a couple of days working out which part files are referred to by which assemblies and then grouping those together to allow me to import.

Since assembly files (as I understand them) are effectively a list of the parts contained within an assembly along with the relative positions of everything, I was hoping that I could import all the assembly files at the same time as all of the parts and have everything show up in a sensible manner in Fusion. Is there a way to achieve this?

@HughesTooling - the first link you posted also works for me.  Would you mind trying to go into private/incognito mode on your browser and putting the link in to see if it works?

Yes that works. Odd the second link worked to get me to the topics page then I could select the Data translation link from that page. I had tried the first link with 2 computers using chrome and internet explorer and they both gave the 404 message.

How many components are in the assembly?

You should be able to use the Pack and Go command to move all of the required/referenced files into a single directory, including the assembly, sub-assemblies, and part files.

Once you have this done, you can upload an assembly via the Dashboard.

uplaod assembly in dashbaord.png

Next, specify the top level assembly file.

upload assembly.PNG

Once the assembly is uploaded, it will appear in the data panel in Fusion 360.

At this point, you can right click on the design and select Create Fusion Design to convert it to a native Fusion Design.

create fusion design-sldasm.png

I note it is also possible to upload the assembly directly through the upload command directly in the data panel. You'll need to watch the text in the upload command to make sure the assembly name is correct at the top.

uplaod as fusion design.PNG

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thansk,

Hi Nathan,

Thanks for the information. The issue that I'm struggling with is that there are a bunch of assemblies, and I wasn't expecting to ever use them outside Solidworks. This means that I would have to "pack and go" for each one before I upload it. I was kind of hoping to just be able to upload all the .SLDASM files and all the .SLDPRT files into one project and then let Fusion 360 find the relevant parts when I open a particular assembly. Looks like I have a bunch of work ahead of me 😞
