I want to break my pattern.

So in my instance I have to create 40 strips laid side by side. Very easy to do with a rectangular pattern. But let's say I want to drill a hole in only one of those strips. If I do so, it does it to all 40 instances. Is there no way to break the link after a pattern is made so I retain the components but now they're all individually editable?

I know Paste New is a option, but pasting and moving 40 of an object just seems wrong...to long of a work around for such a powerful program.

The easiest method is to create the pattern as you have done.

Copy/Paste New the clone you want to have the hole in.

Turn the visibility of the clone off.

Create the hole in the Paste New body/component.

Pattern bodies and then create components from these bodes if you need components.

Such bodies and components can then be edited independently

Hi Mr./Mrs./IRobot InfoZUG2V,

On the TimeLine right-click the pattern's icon and DM (direct model) it.

It would be really cool if that would work with components, alas I cannot conjure up the menu entry to covert the pattern into a DM feature.

If you tested this out before posting and have a workflow that works, could you create a screencast ?

Yes, Mr. Doering,

It only applies to patterns made from bodies (perhaps faces).

This worked brilliantly. Exactly what I was looking for.

Create the sketch. Create new component. Extruded body within that component. Make pattern from bodies. Select all bodies and click create components from bodies.

The bonus is that all of those now individually editable components are nested within the original, essentially grouping them.

Brilliant sir!
