i am not getting warnings like I should speciffically in making a pattern

i am currently doing the tutorial in the laser class in Instrucatables. I am to a point where I select the object to make a circular pattern from and i should get a window that pop up to ask me to use the current position or the previous position and i am not getting it. I tried to then do the rest of the steps in the instruction to make a new component out of the generated piece and the original component is deselected and I cant not check the ok or do anything just close out the pattern making window. i have gone back several times and I dont think i am doing anything wrong. did i change a setting in the interface or is this a program

Welcome to the Fusion 360 Community! I'm not familiar with that particular tutorial. I did some quick searching, but there was a lot of possibilities. Could you share a link to the tutorial or a screenshot of the issue? I will be happy to assist. 

There is the ability to pattern a body or to pattern a component (or other type of patterns (feature and sketch). There is a great tip about the difference between a body and a component below, if you would like some further clarification.

When you're creating the pattern, are you selecting the desired pattern type option?

the tutorial is here http://www.instructables.com/lesson/3D-Lamp/ . he is very specific what to click and why but the warning box he gets in the video i am not getting when i click the make circular pattern nothing about the position of the object and when i click the pattern component it all goes hey wire ithe components disappear and i can not click ok. i pasted a autodesk screen shot showing what i was doing if you compare the two videos i am not getting the same reactions in the program that he does and i do not know whats wrong

i believe i have figured it out after reading what you posted about the 5 things and hopefully i can progress from this point
