How to use component one as a guide and not have it be changed +

Hello, i am working on a project that involves kind of a layering process.  I have component one which is a Building that i want to mill separately from component 2.  I want to use component 1(building)  as a guide for the top layer of component 2 which will be the detail that will go on top of the layer.  How can i sketch component 2 without it having an affect on component 1.  http://a360.co/2qvXqVx this is the link to component 1.  Thanks

You create a second component and make sure it's activated.
Then you can create a sketch on the face of Component 1. This won't affect component 1 but will allow you to reference its geometry for locating component 2.

I tried that and when i push pulled on component 2 and it changed the depth of component 1.  Im not sure why this is happening.  I had component 2 active and the light for component 1 on.  I will try it again but have a feeling im going to come up with the same results.

Thanks,

I tried it again and it is working perfectly!  Thank you.  I have another quick question.  If you look at my sketch i now have a small rectangle in the top right corner (component 2).  How do i select that whole component and mirror it to the other side of the building.  I was planning on using component 2 for all the detail on the front or would you recommend making them all separate components in the over all sketch?

Again Thanks i'm learning more and more each day!!
