How to use centre line as a reference for hole position?

I have a very simple flat quadrilateral object into which I want to place a couple of holes on its centreline.  I've figured how to place a 'construction' line on its centreline, but I'm unable to use it as a reference for the X-axis position of the holes.   Y-axis position of the holes is not a problem because I can select the appropriate edge of the quadrilateral for that. 

So how do I position the holes with respect to the centreline please?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. I see no problem in dimensioning from the centre line.

Sorry, my explanation wasn't good enough: There is no centreline shown on my object -- I created a new sketch on its surface and then drew a 'construction' line down its centre. I'm unable to select that construction line as a reference for the hole positions. I'll attach my file in response to TheCADWhisperer's post.

Edit the sketch.

Add a Sketch Point to the Construction line.

Finish Sketch.

Select the Hole command...

My wild guess absent an example file...

If multiple Holes be sure to select the multiple hole option...

Here's the file.  In a previous step I had created a 'construction' line down the centre one of the vertical legs of the object, but was then unable to use it as a reference when trying to place a hole.

Edit:  I've found the file attach option at the bottom, so here it is.

Your Sketch1 is floating in space.

It should be anchored to the Origin.

Blue lines should keep you awake at night.

You are missing a dimension in Sketch1...

I would use Equal constraints (=) rather than repeating dimension.

Now if you want to change - only one dimension to edit...'

Both Extrusions can be done at the same time (unless of course they might be different heights...

I do not see this step in the file that you linked - so I had to guess...

Thanks, that's getting me on the right track I think.  In sketch mode I've created a circle referenced to the sketch point (i.e. it's on the object's centreline), and then extruded it to make a hole.  I'll try again later with the multi-hole option.

Thanks for going into so much detail.  I've re-done the construction line, and now I'm able to place my holes centrally.  I don't know why the line wasn't present for, as far as I can recall, I've just now done it the same way I thought I did it earlier.

Your other comments about better ways of doing things are much appreciated too.
