How to slice an object with a 3D sketch

Hi everyone,

 

I'm trying to draw up quite an organic shape on Fusion 360 (as seen above).

I'm struggling with how to make it.Right now I've drawn two splines on a lofted cylinder which form the 'outline' of the shape. But now I'm not sure how to delete the parts of the lofted form that fall out of the sketchs' outline.

 

Any suggestions on how to move forward? Or any other approaches?

Have you tried a sweep using profiles and guide rails?  Can you post the file?

This can differ from one design to another, according to the shape you want to split

Please share the file with the cutting sketch to show you how

I tried some sweeps but it was tedious and inaccurate, and I'm unable to thicken the structure beyond 25mm (didn't use guide rails though, so will explore that option today). I've also attached that file as 16 OCT...

It would be better if you can export the native Fusion 360 file.  From the File menu, select Export, then choose Archive (*.f3d) and attach the output file to your post.

Don't mean to butt in here, but looking at that original picture of the object, I would not try to model this in a BRep environment (solid or surface).  Have you considered using TSplines (Sculpt workspace)?  Since this shape is so "organic", it seems like it might be a better toolset to use.

 

Do others agree or disagree?

You're right. Creating this using Patch or Model environments is not an option, This is clearly a job for the sculpt environment!

Now creating it in the sculpt workspace can be done in many different ways, but it will require some analyzing before that to decide the best approach possible, so look at your body carefully from different angles and decide how to get the closest shape to it, and maybe apply some editing for it later on to get even closer until you achieve it

My guess is that you can start with a sweep and then edit it according to an attached canvas, or you can use a loft by creating an over all path and use a plane along path to create the profiles of the loft along it. This might get you closer than the sweep, but be careful not to get the self intersection warnings

So feel free to ask questions along the way whenever you feel you're stuck at a certain point

Here's one approach using tsplines.  model it as an outside shape, and an inside negative shape.

2 years late but THANK YOU for showing me in 8 minutes what took me close to a month Cat LOL
I ended up doing a whole lot of sweeping and lofting wizardry. But this would've been far better.
