How to Separate Component Parts

The attached file and video show the difference in creating the same object two different ways. In Component 1 the two parts become one. In Component 2 they remain separate so you can see the seam between them.

Is it possible to separate Component 1 into its two parts?

Thanks!

Easiest way is to move the timeline back to the creation of the component, then change it.

Split command is another option.

Hi do you know how to separate a set of pieces that in the stl file makes part of just one solid piece?

If you move the time line back wouldn’t you loose everything from that part forward? I have a larger project I want to do this on and as luck would have it the component in question is near the beginning of the time line.

I’ll look into the split command. I am not familiar with it.

Thanks for your help.

Moving back down the timeline, is a temporary manoeuvre, you keep the model intact, go back and you can fix / change the early stuff, then come back to the current end position.

Comes in handy when you have a hindsight moment,

very hard to explain, very easy to use.  As long as you don't delete anything.

Might help...

I used the splitting tool and it did the job. I tried the timeline and couldn’t get it to work. Just a beginners problem.

Thanks for your help.

It first needs to be converted to a brep object.  You need to be in Direct Modeling mode in order to do this.  Right click on the top node in the Browser and select 'Do not capture Design History'.  If the stl has a large number of facets, you may not be able to convert it in Fusion 360.  Meshmixer and Netfabb are two programs that should be able to split the model for you.

Once coverted to brep, use the split command to create separate components/bodies.  Explore the various split options to find the best way.  It may be faster to just create a new Fusion 360 model using the stl as a reference.

Thanks for your help. I am a beginner and your last post is beyond my knowledge base. I am sure I’ll get there eventually.
