How to select only top-level components

In my design, I would like to select some components to mirror. However, some of these components have their own sub-components, so clicking on such a subcomponent will only select that subcomponent and not the top-level component. Because some of the subcomponents are invisible or hidden inside others, I cannot achieve my goal by only selecting subcomponents. The obvious solution is to select components directly from the browser, but I have a very large number of components and the ones I want to select are somewhat randomly scattered, so this is also infeasible.

Is there a shortcut or setting that would allow me to select only top-level components?

Your picture does not depict your problem statement.

To build a file where you intend to mirror sections of it - why would those sections be all over the place?

Can I use the method of grouping together only the components I want to select as subcomponents?

On the "Select" drop-down in the toolbar, go to "Selection Priority", then turn On "Select Component Priority".  Now you can double-click on a sub-component and that should select the parent/top component.  If you need to select a lot of top components together frequently, you can add them to a Selection Set.
